It is believed that avoiding meat is the best diet to lower breast cancer risk. However, there is a plant-based diet that is optimal for preventing breast cancer.


According to Medscape, the best eating regimen to lower breast cancer risk is a plant-based diet that is meat-free. In reality, there's a certain plant-based diet that is optimal for preventing breast cancer.


According to NUTRITION 2022, the American Society for Nutritional Research's most recent annual meeting, data from a study of 65,574 participants gathered between 1993 and 2014 was presented.


Those who ate less meat had a 14% lower risk of developing breast cancer, according to the data. However, this only applied to those on a healthy, plant-based diet. People who consumed unhealthy foods and beverages in addition to plant-based diets experienced a 20% higher risk of breast cancer.





Sanam Shah, MBBS, FCPS, MPH, a doctoral candidate in epidemiology at Paris-Saclay University in France, believes that the best plant-based diet for breast cancer prevention is a healthy plant-based diet consisting of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes. 

On the other hand, Shah stated that an unhealthy plant-based diet consisting primarily of processed plant products such as refined grains, fruit juices, sweets, desserts, and potatoes would be worse for breast cancer prevention. 

According to Elizabeth Ward, MS, RDN, co-author of The Menopause Diet Plan, A Natural Guide to Hormones, Health, and Happiness, factors such as fibre, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients are missing from processed foods like potato chips, French fries, and juice, which are vegetarian but not necessarily healthy.

Research has found that a well-balanced, plant-based diet helps to mitigate the risk of cancer by providing ample amounts of antioxidants, fibre, phytonutrients, protective phytonutrients found only in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, soy foods, and grains, and other plants, according to Ward.


As a result, plant foods' antioxidants help prevent cells from transforming into tumours. Chips and juice, while not 'immediately' cancer-killing, are not at the top of Ward's list because they are so heavily processed.


A baked potato, for example, contains fibre and other healthy nutrients in addition to phytonutrients, and is low in calories, whereas potato chips are high in calories and contain few, if any, cancer-fighting nutrients.

Finally, Ward claims that "the other issue is calories," because "eating too many foods that are relatively high in calories can lead to becoming overweight, which is associated with certain types of breast cancer."
